Day Seven - The Truth Will Set You Free

It's amazing how so much trouble can be avoided just by telling the truth.  Today the US Olympic Committee (along with the International Olympic Committee and US Swimming) handed down a ten month suspension to Ryan Lochte for his role in the gas station incident in Rio during the Summer Olympics.  He will miss the world championships next year and media outlets are already saying this suspension will be felt long beyond the ten month duration.  If you don't know what incident I am referring to (or you've put it out of your mind because you were sick of the media coverage), let me bring you up to speed.

Four American swimmers went out partying.  They left inebriated in a taxi and stopped at a gas station.  They tried to get into a locked bathroom, but it was locked.  So they used the side of the gas station.  Lochte broke a sign.  When they were leaving, off duty police officers/security guards stopped them and requested money to "cover damages."  They didn't want to give them the money and tried to leave in the taxi.  Supposedly an officer drew his firearm.  They paid the officers and were eventually allowed to leave.  Lochte and his pals could have simply relayed that story when questioned.  They simply could have kept the whole thing under their hats.  They could have done several different things that would not have blown this up into the international scandal/media firestorm that it became.  If only.  Instead they lied.  They made up a story about getting mugged, and Lochte even saying that a gun was cocked and the barrel pressed to his head.  Next the Brazilian government got involved and even pulled one of the swimmers off of his return flight home.  After initially defending the swimmers, the media then judged them guilty and blasted them as disgraces to America (based on claims they had vandalized the gas station, resisted arrest, and acted like stereotypical Americans abroad), and then finally after investigation, the media showed the true story of drunk guys whizzing on a wall and having to pay a bribe to police officers/security guards.
***You can read about all of it here

So, why did they do it?  Were they starved for media attention because once again Michael Phelps took most of the headlines?  Did they think they were going to get into more trouble, so they proactively made up a story in hopes their stupidity wouldn't be seen (how'd that work out of them)?  Maybe they just were too darn drunk or hungover to really remember what the heck happened the night before.  Who knows!  Here is what is wrong with all of this.  It all could have been avoided by telling the truth.  If they hadn't made up the story it probably never would have become an international incident.  If they had only told the truth, the ban would never have been discussed.

What does honesty have to do with weight loss?  More than you might imagine.  You see self-deceit is one of the biggest things that will keep you from losing weight.  A false reality of the extra weight, or promises to yourself that you will "get started losing later."  Believe me, I have lied to myself for years, and I am finally getting honest.  My weight is a hindrance to my life, and I will no longer convince myself that it isn't.  I will see myself exactly as I look each morning in the mirror.  So what are you lying to yourself about.  Maybe it isn't weight loss.  Maybe it's an anger problem or laziness.  Maybe it's drinking too much or a habitual lying problem.  I don't know what it is for you, but I know that honesty is the only way to be free.  And I know that for me, it is the only way that I will be able to lose my butter half.

Another successful day, and this time staying under 1500 calories (probably need try to be a little closer to 1500/day).  The hardest part was at mens Bible study tonight they had NYPD Pizza.  I had just had dinner so I had to say no.  Y'all know how much I like pizza.  To make matters worse, we had prayer time tonight.  Do you know how hard it is to focus on prayer when the entire room smells like pizza?  I do.
